Summer brings its joys and woes... This was a spontaneous dialogue between Kathy and me, as a response to my poem, 'Summer Rain'... I hope you enjoy it?

Summer Heat (in Collaboration with Kathy)

In my part of the Earth,
Summer scorches every leaf,
The hot air rises off the asphalt,
creating mirages on days bleak,
The crops lie ripe and girded in sheaves,
Upon the golden-brown-wheat-fields...

The Koel sings her songs of longing,
The peacock hoots in the green fields,
When the mangoes become red and juicy,
And Monsoon clouds gather over the heath...

And when the very first showers of rain,
Kiss the parched earth's lips in refrain,
My heart takes a leap, and dances in the rain...

The summer's humid air
takes the curl from my hair
and leaves sweat across my lips
putting a dampness on the tips
of my fingers and my toes
Oh where is the water hose?
A summer shower would be nice
some rasberry tea with lots of ice
I would rather dangle my feet
in a stream than to feel the heat
of a sizzling summer's sultry day
in Mid-America USA.

When there is oppressive heat,
It becomes impossible to breathe,
Down my brow trickles sweat,
Nothing helps to ease the heat...

Then the heat begin to rise
Clouds deep gray cover the sky,
And the heat begins to die,
Cool zephyr Begins to blow,
And my heart begins to glow...
Today it poured and poured away,
Streets were flooded all the way
My car got stuck in the rain,
As the rain overflowed the drain...

But it was a welcome change
As the heat began to vane
The world suddenly came alive,
Trees were green and blue were skies

My children rushed out to play
Jumping, shouting all the way
Heavenly it is to bathe and drench
When the rain pours at a stretch...

As the clouds build to the west
a rolling, spinning ominous sight
thrills the mind but chills the brain
for all that's coming is a twisted rain
one that comes with winds a whirl
tearing town monuments
pulling trees up to show their roots
twisting metal into pretzels
and uplifting cars, houses, and boots
Oh those Twisters, those Tornados
they are powerful domination
over any and all of God's creation
but after the storm leaves its carnage
all is calm, blue skies, bird singing
And people are left thinking about
what it is that causes such disaster
Leaving only the trash and just no answer.

Summer offers bliss and sorrow
It gives us hope and brings us tomorrows
We enjoy the crickets, the fireflies,
the fireworks on the Fouth of July
and we curse the heat,
the gnats, the sweat, horseflies
We offer thanks for the bounty of a garden
of delicious fresh vegetables
filling out tables and satisfying our tummies
Watermelons, cantaloupes, green beans,
fresh cucumbers, corn on the cob
okra, tomatoes, and new potatoes and greens
Oh the joys of summer and the pain it brings
are what makes this a season like all the rest
there are the good times, the bad times,
but lets try to remember the best
for we live in it for the rest of our days
lets feel some happiness and romp and play!

There, it begins to rain!
Now the peacock lifts its tail,
Quivers, shivers, pirouettes,
Does a kind of fox trot,
And begins to dance...
Peahens around him stand
Mesmerized, and watch the dance...

Koel cooks, and sings her song,
Of longing and desire strong,
Children imitate her hoots,
Making her more desperate
She answers with immediacy,
Thinking it's her mate's ditty.
A dialogue interesting ensues
Between the children and the cuckoo
Till she virtually drives herself crazy...

Night comes and the cicada sings,
Frog create such a din
The Bubul chooses the wee hours
When the sun still slumbers,
Robin-red breast at four o'clock
With her mate has a talk...
Queen of Night, the fragrant flower
Attracts the moths the whole night long...

Cool breeze blows in the morn
I am dreaming in my bed warm
Of those times when we got drenched
And clung to each other clenched
our teeth together, and shivered,
Partly due to cold, and partly due to
That feeling of passion that comes
And engulfs your countenance
And just leaves you in trance...
