The wreckage of the day

I walk slowly this evening
Slower than usual
Through the empty streets
Through the wreckage of the day
Cheered on only by empty smiles
The sky is grey and it holds my thoughts
And i approach another bridge.

Barbed voices invite themselves into my mind
Dogs snarl in the distance
People pass caged in tiny fearful worlds
And she on the bridge
In the red coat - watches
And she waits for an answer.

Within her
All the glory of the world is stuffed into a plastic bag
A monument to absurdity
Every trick that was ever played
Played and played again
They say the cards are dealt freely for all to play
But who stacks the deck?

I draw closer to the bridge
The trees whisper their secrets
And the autumn leaves wait their chance
Finally - both ends greet me in the middle
But she has left
Left so long ago
But i still feel her warmth within the stones
And i slip all too easily into the chaos of her mind
And i watch as all life flows by
And i wait for her answer.

The sun strays from behind a cloud
And in the moment clarity is observed
We all dance a fragile dance
Like the autumn leaf
We wait nervously
For our chance.

So preoccupied
With the labels
The judgements
The measurements
Drowning in the garish make-up of the world
Rushing headlong into the high street
Of cold and shallow detachment
No security found here.

And here we thrash in the water
Waiting
Yearning for someone to tear down the facades
To look upon our simplicity
To feel our warmth
To want our needs
To be secure in our weakness
To know our true value
To value our true worth
To see beyond the packaging
To ignore the price - on the tag!

The sky is grey and it holds my thoughts
As i walk through the wreckage
Of another day.

I have no words to describe how much this piece moves me...Rik, I have missed your work and this is just one fine example of why....haunting but brilliant in its simplicity of thought....it searches the heart for answers to the questions of the fragilty of this life.
Outstanding.
