To a dear friend when she was the child within

Sonnet 103 The Child Within You

When first I opened tearing eyes to see
first light of day, first night, first quarter moon,
I lay in helpless heap, your arms and me
your flesh my comforter, not warm too soon.

Your breasts, my fountains, fed my child's needs
your body's warmth my heat, your mother's way
to nurture by your voice, your loving deeds,
the smile beaming in the words you say.

I grew to love the you that gave me life,
my mother standing always by my side
to father, faithful, too devoted wife
angelic helpmate through the day you died.

Now, I am you, and we at last are one
as Heaven's Father, Holy Ghost, and Son.
