A Bag of Tools

Isn't it strange
That princes and kings,
And clowns that caper
In sawdust rings,
And common people
Like you and me
Are builders for eternity?
Each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass,
A book of rules;
And each must make
- Ere life is flown -
A stumbling block
Or a stepping stone.

John Lambremont, Sr.
This poem was used by the Heptones in their 1973 release "Book of Rules." A beautful, sweet reggae song...

Jamaican band The Heptones recorded a number of different versions of this song - not all have the verse "Look where the rain is falling from the sky." This verse was added by The Heptones to the original poem by R.L. Sharpe A Bag Of Tools, which the song is based upon.

Bobby & the Midnites, a 1981 studio album by Grateful Dead singer and guitarist Bob Weir, contains a cover of this song. It has also been recorded by Desmond Dekker and Inner Circle. (thanks, Ken - Naivasha, Kenya, for above 2)
