Everyone fears something . . . this is mine.

A Sonnet While I Can

Is there a dark as deep as mine tonight?
Even the flame that leaps from match to curls
Of birch bark kindling and quickly swirls
On logs laid long months ago casts no light
On shadows I know are waiting for me . . .
Destiny coded in the very strands
And coils of my blood . . . and I understand
Too well the inevitability.

My father’s and his father’s legacy -
An inheritance I cannot disclaim
Of memories fading ‘til none remain;
The stranger in the shadows will be me.
Then life will have taken all that it gave
Then the daily dying, dark as the grave.

I agree with the others, this is a very well penned sonnet. I share in the thoughts expressed....the fear is one that is hard to put into words but you did an excellent job.

The language you have used is very deep - the mood, obviously very dark. At the same time - it's personal to you, but I think it will relate to others aswell. I really like this - please, keep sharing your poetry. I enjoy reading them.

Regards,
John.

Years ago there was a TV program, Ben Casey, about a doctor. It began with Greek symbols; Man, Woman, Birth, Death, Infinity.
You've have done a great job on the last two of these!
Fine writing.
Thank you, Nick

Beautiful sonnet.
A fear worth fearing.
