To Big For My Britches

When my dad told me many years ago

That "I was too big for my britches"

Why my reply to him, I still don't know

Had him laughing aloud and in stitches

He wasn't prone to laughing aloud

His demeanor, perceived as quite serious

He wasn't too often with humor endowed

So what made him then so delirious?

I simply asked if he knew of a store

Where britches were sold that were larger

My question brought on his uproarious roar

Only mom understood that old codger

I recon we are all victims of the fashions of the older generations! Stan it was ill fitting misfitting breeches. Or his gramps saying '' Well plenty of growing room ,Stanly will grow in to them. But Stanly did all right but in no time at all! Me it was a cute dress , Rob! At least me sister had a good ''hand me downs! ''

Was it a cute mistake, or were you a precociously sarcastic little whippersnapper??

:-,?

One of those "out of the mouth of babes" moments. For me I would have been told not to get "too big for your boots." It's nice to know that the sayings and humour are still running through the generations.

A lot of great humor has come from people honestly responding to statements they didn't fully understand. Well composed (saving the punch line until almost the end) and rhymed, Stan.

I was brought up by my grandfather and a legion of maiden aunts who varied from strictness to rather bohemian ways - one was keen on little children being seen but not heard - a tough request to a four year old :-) Thank you I enjoyed and I h ope the britches now fit better!

P.S. I never heard that particular expression in relation to me, but I did hear "If you ever say that again I'm going to wash your mouth out with soap!" I still remember the taste of Dial.

It's a shame to waste a good pair of britches. Maybe they'd fit Don. Just a thought.

My parents were always using that expression with me. For years, like you, I wondered why the size of my trousers was of so much concern to them; and since at that age I couldn't buy my own wearing apparel, why didn't they supply me with appropriate pants. Life is really confusing to a child, no?

Loved the poem.

I love to know that you think of your parents..I do indeed, every minute of every day. A heartfelt poem, and I love it.
Thankyou..

You reminded me a true story of me , Stan. On my arrival! Now my dads parents were of the Edwardian age. In their time , little boys and little boys. There were no gender differences. So boys were dress in girls clothing. Me grandparents sent down from dads home. A pretty green dress , apparently I look kind of cute!
