old man reflects

in the long years of an outlaw life

i have hitched on neon slicked highways
walked on cracking byways
tramped on shadowed pathways

i have flown over endless oceans
sailed jagged coastlines
waded through bubbling streams

i have fallen exhausted in the snow
danced in flower-specked meadows
slept on surf-washed beaches

i have been living with the blues
been captivated by jazz
marveled at the classics

i have studied the most brilliant works
of the world's greatest minds
adding to the richness of my life

i have been bored into unconsciousness
by inanities posing as wisdom
by nonsense pretending depth

i have wasted some of my valuable time
on pseudo-intellectual facades
and the emptiness behind

i have watched in silent horror
as desperate aquaintances
joined malignent sects

i have been despised and insulted
by those that are deaf to reason
and afraid of analytic thought

they that cannot accept
that the rejection of their doctrines
is not because i do not understand

but because i do

"Outlaw life" is an intriguing phrase . . . it seems a life well lived, the many passages and places and possibilities, a clear sense of self and truth. Few can say as much, fewer say it as well.
