i wonder

i wonder why
i cannot let you go
despite the
overwhelming evidence

i wonder why
everyday i dream
infinity
with you

i wonder why
it's like looking
up a cliff with no hope
of ascent

because it's apparent
that somehow
we started off wrong
or at least not right

because i cannot be
what i am not
in order to make you
fall in love

because i have built
you a temple
too large
to hold anyone

i know why
i love you
it's your smile
it's your laugh
your ups
your downs
your rights and wrongs

i love you
for your thoughtfulness
for our conversations
for your intellect
for our jokes
honesty truth integrity

for your continual striving
to improve yourself
where it matters
for the listening
and the sharing

i do not know why
you don't can't won't see it
but i have some ideas
though i don't know
how i can change it
and i don't know
if i even should
