Once upon a time...

Excerpt from Prometheus: The fall of the house of Limon: Sunday sunlight
Poem translation by Grace Hazard Conklin

Once upon a time
There was a pretty child;
People talked tenderness to her,
Petted her for their pleasure.
The little girl had a doll,
The doll was pretty too,
With the charming name CORDELIA.
Once, once upon a time . . .

The doll, I admit, was dumb
Not a word she said to her playmate

"Why don't you talk like people,
Say loving words to me!"
Not a word would the doll utter.
The little girl grew angry;
Down went the doll on the floor . . .
She breaks it, stamps upon it.
And then, a miracle!

The doll with her last breath
Spoke: "But I loved you too,
And more than any loved you!
Only I could not say so"
Once, once upon a time . . .

Gorgeous parable with a message so apropos to so many people. Sometimes people find the word 'love' the hardest word to say. And when they finally get the nerve, it may be too late.

Thanks for posting this. Another poet I was not aware of and will be on the watch for.
