and if it isn't this issue, it is one of a thousand others no less important

Sonnet

I can continue to write my poems,

And think about the thousand women

Traumatized and now abandoned by Boko Haram.

I can do both, but I cannot do both

With a clean and clear conscience.

Terri and I are taking a stand, at least between ourselves,

To make a difference, no matter how tiny.

We've been given too much, and have

Taken too much for granted for too long

Not to stop and assess, and consider

That's it's one world, it could be us, and if isn't us,

It is someone whose life is no less meaningful than ours.

I cannot, and will not, stop writing, but my thoughts,

In spite of my salacious words, are elsewhere.

Someone who is truly passionate isn't constrained to only what is salacious but cares deeply about many things, many others, passion become compassion.

I read yesterday that Boko Haram is being marginalized, which is good news but small comfort to the thousands of women and children who have been brutalized by them. All of our thoughts should be with them too.

This is an interesting poem. It works because, in spite of your use of the term, it contains no "salacious words." Clearly, your thoughts were focused on what you were writing.

We must all make a stand and balance our conscience with what is feasible and achievable. Keep writing please.
