The Roads She Took

People often ask me why she looks so down
Why they never see her smile, why she wears a frown
I tell them her life's story in hopes they'll understand
Life is a rough game to play when you go from man to man

She was the youngest daughter of a poor dirt farming clan
She gave herself one evening to a fast talking travelin' man
He left that young girl with a child who would never have a name
She had to leave the county to hide the family's shame

She's seen so much of life, she's older than her years
So little time of laughter, so many times of tears
Her face should not be wrinkled, she's not as old as she may look
It's not the miles she's traveled, it's just the roads she took

In the city she met a rich man, she thought that she did good
He put her in a fancy house in a high-class neighborhood
But to him, she was a plaything. When his game was through,
He tossed her out like garbage. Life can be so cruel

She's seen so much of life, she's older than her years
So little time of laughter, so many times of tears
Her face should not be wrinkled, she's not as old as she may look
It's not the miles she's traveled, it's just the roads she took

She was thumbin' home to mama, got picked up by a truck
She really liked the driver, she thought she'd changed her luck
The trucker was a family man, with a wife and some kids
He took what he wanted and dumped her like the others did

She's seen so much of life, she's older than her years
So little time of laughter, so many times of tears
Her face should not be wrinkled, she's not as old as she may look
It's not the miles she's traveled, it's just the roads she took

Now she hungers for attention, she goes to all the bars
Accepting drinks from strangers, pleasing them in their cars
She gets no satisfaction, it's all part of life's cruel game
She'll take on any man and never ask his name

She's seen so much of life, she's older than her years
So little time of laughter, so many times of tears
Her face should not be wrinkled, she's not as old as she may look
It's not the miles she's traveled, it's just the roads she took

This poor girl will never be happy for she will always hurt
From all the men she trusted that treated her like dirt
Now there's a lesson to her story,for morality's sake
As you travel through this life, be careful which roads you take

She's seen so much of life, she's older than her years
So little time of laughter, so many times of tears
Her eyes should not be so cold, she's not as old as she may look
It's not the miles she's traveled, it's just the roads she took
