Folk rituals, customs and beliefs: April

Lazarovden, Lazarnitsa:
Lazarus Day is celebrated in honor of the fields, pastures and forests. According to belief, St. Lazarus always carried in his hands the ax with which he cleared the forests for land for pasture and plowing.
The most significant moment of the holiday is the promotion of the Lazarus Circus and singing songs in his honor. In appearance, this custom corresponds to male carols in winter.
Lazarizing is one of the most interesting maiden rituals. It is believed that a girl who has not lazed cannot wash. For the holiday, they dress up in their latest clothes. They gather in groups and start touring the houses. Two of them carry an ax or a large staff and are called Lazarus Brides - named after St. Lazarus. When they enter the yard of the house, they are arranged in a circle. In the middle stand Lazarus brides, around them four other Lazars and start playing individually without grasping hands. The rest sing the songs of Lazarus, wishing them fertility in fields, vineyards and livestock, as well as for each family member, but most of all for unmarried girls. Specific songs are also sung for some craftsmen: tailors, jewelers, traders, hunters and more. With their songs, the Lazars circumnavigate the whole village. During the tours, they are donated only with raw white eggs, as explicitly dictated. Therefore, the girls carry small wicker baskets in which to collect them.
Late in the evening, they agree on where to meet the next day to perform the second rite - kuming. This day is Vrbnitsa - Tsvetnitsa.
Vrbnitsa, Palm Sunday:

This is the last flowering Sunday before the Resurrection of Christ - Easter. It is called Vrbnitsa or more Bloom.
On this day, they continue to celebrate the Lazars, performing an important ritual for the girls called kuming. All the girls who lazed on the previous day go together to the river, because the nodding is only on the river. Ritual doll-shaped bread made the previous day and small boards or baking pads are worn. They put wreaths of flowers and willow on their heads. Caught two by two by the hands, with songs they head to the river. There, which the girl has no willow wreath, is woven. They choose a quiet place where the river flows calmly. They play a maiden choir before they start fussing. Then they break pieces of ritual bread and place them on the bats or boards. They are simultaneously released into the water and watched whose bread sailed farthest and outstripped the others. They also determine their choice of idol. In many places in the country, Lazarians put willow or flower wreaths in the river instead of pieces of ritual bread. Choosing a godfather is the same.
When the ceremony is over, the entire song group returns to the village. The idol receives them in his home. There they continue to sing, swing on swings, get ready for health and feast.
At Tsvetnitsa, the homes are decorated with freshly torn willow branches and flowers. The festive liturgy in the church is attended.
Lush people are forbidden to play during the Lent. That's why a dance called Fighter is played. Only girls, usually those who will later be Lazars, participate in it. The most deranged, the greatest male of them is chosen as a leader or so-called. fighter.

Easter - Resurrection of Christ:
One of the biggest religious spring holidays is Easter. This is the day of Christ's Resurrection. It is preceded by the so-called. Holy Week or Holy Sunday. Of particular importance during it are the days of Good Wednesday, Good Thursday, Good Friday and Good Saturday.
No women's work is being done on Good Wednesday.
Eggs are painted on Good Thursday. The first egg is always red, and it is thought to have the power to protect against distress and to bring about health. With it, the mother rubs the children on the cheeks and forehead, and then leaves him in front of the home icon, where he stands until Good Thursday next year. To protect themselves from hail during this day, women do not do housework and men do not plow. This ban applies to all the next six quarters, also called the Great.
After the eggs are painted, a new young yeast is mixed into which the herbs are put.
On Easter Friday, before the Resurrection of Christ, Easter cosuns are also being prepared.
On Saturday, ritual breads are prepared for the holiday. They can be round, oblong or knit and are called Easter cows, Easter colts, braids, ovaries and more. They are all made with fat and fried with eggs before baking. They lay white or painted eggs with which they are baked.
On Saturday, or so-called. On Saturday Saturday, the women carry and hand over painted eggs and rhinestones to the cemetery for the dead.
Easter is celebrated for three days. The first day is always on a Sunday and going to church. Ordinary greetings are also exchanged. "Christ is Risen" with the answer "Truly Risen." The candles they kept there were lighted to the house. Fucking with painted eggs and trying on the goat. Whose egg comes out the healthiest, it will be the healthiest of the year. We go to visit friends, relatives, friends, play people, swing on swings.
The week after Easter is known as Light or Tomorrow Sunday.
Suitable dishes for the holiday are: painted Easter eggs, Easter knitted Kozunaks.

Ranopolia, St. Sava Stratilat - April 24:
The holy martyr Sava Stratilat is originally from the Gothic tribe. He served in the Roman army. After receiving the doctrine and faith of Christ, he was tormented and drowned in a river. This happened during the time of Emperor Aurelian.
The holiday is also called Ranopolia, Raspus, Napus, and others, because on that day all servants are released from their masters and have the right to either stay with them again or leave them. No field work is done during the day. Men and women go out into the field to pick a sorrel. Some places in Bulgaria celebrate the day against hailstorms and heavy flooding so that they are not swept away by the water. Elsewhere they do not return anything they have borrowed.
