Merry Christmas to you all!

A Cowboy's Christmas

I've drawn the short straw this year,
Watching over the remotest corral
In a whipping Wyoming winter:
Flint-hearted gales, sharp shards of snow,
Barbed-wire hail that makes me bow my head,
But between windburn and white-out
I still manage to see in Christmas,
An awestruck guest in Nature's nativity:
Dog star above my shack,
Company of the cattle,
Gold of the dawn,
Frankincense of the pines,
Myrrh of the prairie;
And where is the Child?
I cradle Him inside me, today and always.
