Poetry Has Never Been a Favorite

and kyle said this:

      "  i have a confession to make

          i dont actually like poetry

theres not much else i find

          as woefully boring as poetry

          especially the classical stuff

made me want to cry in class

makes me want to cry still

          what an absolute misery

          so very difficult to stand

sure, the wording can be flowery

and it can be cleverly constructed

but whatever it is it means only

the poet could ever be able to tell

its all only annoying in the end

          prefer concrete, direct language

instead of an enigma to solve

at each line ill be reading, thanks!

          imagine if people expressed

themselves like this all of the time

i posit thered be rampant murders!  "

I understand the feeling very well.

I laboured through classical (18th and 19th-century) poetry when I was just starting to read. Later, I found the modern verse much more relatable, though it's nowhere approachable or accessible. Contemporary poetry, on the other hand, is all about race and gender and sexuality . . . written by academics!

Perhaps slow reading (or reading the poems repeatedly) would help. Or understanding the socio-political context of the work or the poets. :)

P.S. I hope you're doing well and in good health.

In the right hands, poetry is the highest form of writing. It is coherent and meaningful while making the most wonderful music with nothing but the sounds of words. Unfortunately, the right hands are extremely rare. Don't blame the art for its sorry state. Blame the legions of poseurs and oafs who attempt to to make it (and are praised by other poseurs and oafs for doing so).

I remember that in our highschool yearbooks, back when, we were asked to provide our "Ambition": I put something trivial and cringeworthy, but one classmate of mine said that his ambition was "To make poets write in prose."

I think I should like to see poetry taught in such a way that people would not make that wish! Sometimes, school just kills poetry for a bunch of folks who might otherwise appreciate it, if left to their own devices.

Maybe that's kind of why, I am more comfortable calling my self a versalater, than calling my self as a poet. ;)

How many murders do there have to be before we get to "rampant?"

Discussing poetry is the best possible way to lose friends. It's a perverse addiction.

it is the same for me, poetry is an ersatz of what I wished for me, an expedient
but I must say, I am not in total control of what I am writing when I pretend to make some poetry
