Chasm

He looks at me with his intense eyes full of dark holes
and tells me within him is a chasm of darkness he cannot escape

I have a chasm too

When I was a child I thought the way to fill this chasm was to carve it out from my skin
to fill it with external pain
to express it
to voice it
to put it in poetry form

then one day I realized
the chasm isn't something you dig out
it's not something you get rid of
it is nothingness
it is absence of light

And all I needed to do was open the curtains
clean the windows and let the light in

and the chasm would be filled

There are days where I don't fill my chasm

And there are days when I raise my hands to heaven
and I speak the wonderful Words
I build a connection
I let the rays fall down on me like a torrent
and fill my chasm until it is bursting

Those days are my happiest days
when I can take that torrent and put it in a cup and share it with those around me

I have everything to give on those days

But on the days where I don't fill my chasm
I have nothing to give you
I have no emotions
no feelings
just mimicry
