Reaching For The Light

I believe I reached for the light
With a quiet desperate fight
Where self denial became a means
To bring peace that is not pristine
Yet I did this simple thing
Without knowing or thinking

Reaching extending fingers to touch
A light that shape shifted enough
So I never was able to grasp
A solace I sought until a last gasp
Of the one who kept the target
Forever out of reach with regrets

When the last cast call quenched
The spirit of ongoing dissent
Light still shifted beyond my reach
As I looked for a moment that teaches
Where I might find an answer
I realized my quest was a cancer

That carved a hole from within
Desperation defined what was destined
A salve which did not exist
To heal a pain that subsists
Where inner peace is not dictated
By a force of will to create

A place that was my choice
No matter the lack of crisis
So today my quest is empty of stress
Blessed with warm caresses
Lit by finite gentle sanity
Where at last I touch the light

Dear Kee,

Your poem reminded me of a quote, author unknown: “In life, you have two loves…one who changes the way you see yourself and the world. The second, who puts you back together after you have lost the first.” Now I don’t necessarily hold to the belief that we each only have two loves during our lives, but I do believe that each relationship we forge builds on the one(s) before, leading us to the place where we more fully understand ourselves and thus we can offer another the peace, steadiness, and gentleness that makes the relationship loving and lasting. That this relationship can come in the winter of one’s life makes it all the more precious.

Blessings~
Melinda
