MARRY ME TRANLATED BY ANN WOOD
“-Marry me!- No!
- Marry me!
- NO!
She refuses me again. I've proposed to her in every way possible - on one knee, with a ring, in an expensive restaurant, outside, among friends, just the two of us, on Christmas, on Valentine's Day, on our anniversary... and she always, always answers "no".
She shakes her head and says - "You're not ready".
Am I not ready? I won't be any more ready!
What should I do? I don't know what to do anymore!
There's nothing I haven't tried. She doesn't want to and doesn't want to... but we're together.
The two of us. And it's great! Every day is an adventure with her. She's such a crazy person. I never know what she's thinking or what she's going to do. I just know it's going to be interesting.
And yesterday, as I was screwing in a light bulb, she just stood there, like that, looking at me with a strange look and as she was taking a sip from her can, she said to me:
- You know that that guy Has the cobbler on the corner closed?
- Yes, I saw...
- There are hardly any craftsmen anymore? People don't fix anything! Right? They just buy new ones. The old ones break and throw them away.
- Mhm...
- Okay, let's do it!
- What? - I shout.
- Let's get married!
I was about to fall off the ladder. After all my special offers and after all her refusals, SHE proposes to me to get married NOW! Here! In the middle of the kitchen at 2:30 pm? After we talked about the cobbler.
- What?
- However...
- Somehow, I knew there would be a "however" or a "but"... - I said and laughed.
- No giving up! No running! Rings are taken off, promises are broken... You know it! Look at yours! Look at ours, damn it! The whole world is divorced because it can't keep its word... because, when something breaks and it doesn't fix it... We should be different... to be... Gentlemen - our word, to be above everything. Ugh, they and the others must have said that but... - she sighed - I don't just want a wedding and a signature and a ring... I want you. Me and you - A lifetime. That's it! Do you accept?
I got down from the stairs carefully, because I didn't want to ruin the wonderful moment by breaking a limb.
- I accept!
She smiled and wrapped her arms around me.
- You know, you're very sexy in those work overalls.
- We're talking serious things, and you're joking.
- They are serious, aren't they? I think it's official now, you know - she said - I can't imagine life without you!
Then I understood why she kept saying no to me until now. For her, this wasn't just marriage. It wasn't some kind of action that was expected of us, like going, signing, putting on rings, throwing a party for 200 people and then she to become "the wife". No! It's much deeper. This is a promise. It's not even a promise, it's an oath! Promises are broken. Oaths - never. So I didn't get married - I SWORE.”
