The Fool's Day

April Fool’s Day has been celebrated for centuries, but its exact origin is still a bit of a mystery—fitting for a day built on tricks and surprises.
One popular explanation goes back to 16th-century France. In 1582, when Gregorian Calendar Reform moved New Year’s Day from late March to January 1, not everyone got the news right away. Those who continued celebrating the old New Year around April 1 were teased and called “April fools,” often becoming the target of harmless pranks.
Over time, the idea of playing tricks on April 1 spread across Europe. In Scotland, it became a two-day event involving practical jokes, while in England and later America, it grew into a lighthearted tradition of pranks, hoaxes, and good-natured fun.
Today, April Fool’s Day is all about laughter—whether it’s a small joke between friends or a clever trick played by companies and media.

Just remember… when it comes to genealogy, even on April 1, the records still matter!
