The weather is one of the last relatively neutral conversation starters left for us to use.

Converstion Starter

In times of drought
we pray for rain,
enough to penetrate
the thirsty skin of earth,
move deep within,
watering the roots,
restoring balance,
refilling the reservoirs
needed to cycle it back
to us.

We have our fill of it
within days, start
praying for it to end,
to shed our rain gear,
walk about without the mud
weighing us down,
enjoy our lives
without hesitation or delay,
the sun a welcome sight
as clouds clear to blue.

Is there anywhere on earth
where balance is achieved,
where just the perfect amount
of rain and sunshine,
grace each day,
so that people never worry,
never comment on the weather?

Even if such a place exists,
the people there
would still remark,
use weather
as a conversation starter,
an icebreaker to common ground.

Perhaps we should be grateful
for the shared, unavoidable,
uncontrollable topic
of weather, for in it
we find connection.

Yes, true, what you say in your super poem which illustrates the point very effectively. A conversation starter for sure, but these days also a question loaded with the conundrum of climate change. I often ask people what there weather has been like to compare with what I experience on my patch of Earth. Blessings, Allen

Everybody Talks About the Weather, But Nobody Does Anything About It--Mark Twain.

I think it (the weather) is a good ice-breaker (no pun intended). Or just about anything that people have in common. When I was a kid I wanted to be a meteorologist.
