A Quaint Feminist
In an interview, a famous (male) actor, when asked about the women in his life, answered how he was an amalgamation of them all. He left it at that but the interviewer, a woman herself and the answer piquing her curiosity, pushed further in and when probed, the actor said he meant that everything about him, all his qualities, came from different women. His calm demeanor, he said, came from his mother, his various aunts shared with him their many talents, he learned about french cuisine from an old ex, and even his proclivity for Japanese crime fiction came from a girl he’d had a brief dalliance some 20 years ago. Throughout it all, the interviewer, a woman, nodded and asked him if he thought there was nothing original about him, and shouldn’t the women have reached the heights he’d reached. To which he responded with a curt smile and simply said, they were the ingredients and he the final dish. The audience applauded while the camera panned to the interviewer’s tightening forehead lines.Poetry by Sameen
