A Quaint Acquaintance

The boisterous barmaid struck a curious deal
With him, that split lip stranger, sitting there
Nursing his drink and playing with his meal.
Sharp eyes so bright we noticed it from here.

One of us cleared their throat and downed their beer;
Chest puffed, walked up to him, to tease and query.
The stranger’s tongue, slipped through lip, spit sincere,
Soft words. And so, our friend returned quite merry

But when asked what went on, their frame grew weary.
Their back slumped back. Their eyes glazed white. They fell
Head first onto the ground. It was quite eerie:
Our friend writhed on the floor like struck church bells.

Mere moments after, we looked up to see
The barmaid’s toothy smile grow rapidly.
