State of Grace

Such is this life that we have won -
one minute here and then just gone.
Through starlit lands that fade to gray
the pain of loss led me astray.

It is the greatest grief of man
to know that loves' eternal span
must be expressed within a space
of life and hope - a state of grace.

This is is the only life we've got -
one minute here and then it's not.
It is not given you to know
when life will lose its one-time glow.

Like summer rains that feed the leaf -
our time alive's so very brief.
Keep those flowers upon your brow
and know the fairytale is now.
