This poem is dedicated to a dear childhood friend. Everything is true. These are my thoughts to her as she is sitting in the emergency psychiatric care unit waiting for me to come visit her tomorrow morning.

Flickering Life

A life always wavering
determined to extinguish itself
always found
discovered
stopped

before it flickers into darkness

All her friends and family cry
desperately trying to convince her to live
only triggering her to do it again
with their words
their wails

She looks at me and asks me
"Why don't you cry?"

I have no words to convince her
I know I have no such power
I will cry when she is gone

for now
all the words I have are embraces
and all the emotions I want to give her are our friendship

All I have to give is to cherish our moments together

whether they be a few more days
a few more hours

or years to come

Love this! You're so right; one cannot do anything about a suicide. Suicide's not about anyone other than the person themselves. Just being there until the end is enough.

John Ashleigh
Powerful. A beautiful tribute, so sad and sentimental. You really set the mood in this poem. I hope things look up for you and your friend. Thankyou for sharing these words.

Regards,
John.
