a reaction to the recent Utøya massacre in Norway, as well as reading the newspapers in general

Silent screams

I do not know anyone that was there
I did not know any of the people whose lives were taken

But as I hear their stories, their pain, their fears, their guilt

I must fight for my heart not to bleed with them
for my life to not stop up, just as theirs have

Every day billions of people are forced to live onwards
after seeing things, experiencing things that would make any person tremble to their core

How can we not be affected?

What a powerful piece, SW.
I read The Times daily so I have kept up to date with the massacre. And '[s]ilent screams', I find, is often my own reaction to stories of riots and murders and foul play in general terms.
So this poem resonates very much. And it is very hard not to be affected, of course. My solution is simply to comment where I feel personal experience qualifies. For I do feel a responsibility to all who suffer, having suffered much myself.
An excellent write.
