An exploration of a theme bothering me lately. The background story is based in real life, but stylized to give a different impression in order to make contrasts in the poem.

Confirmation Bias

I meet you in the depth of those things that we love
a first impression that leaves traces upon ones heart

I met him in our laughter and joy of the world
seeing me laugh, he was the first to grab my hand
and catch me when he saw me cry

an understanding of those things I love and live for
unfortunately contrasted to
an understanding of my emotional nature and day-to-day persona

Touching upon someone
in some mode
I show them my side of the situation we are in
and they show me theirs

How then to show the other sides?
without contrasting or confirming their first impressions

The first moment one speaks
that first glance one catches of the other person
becomes the defining moment
colouring the every following moments

How then can I say?
"I know you"

and furthermore

"I love you"
