Out of this light into a greater light.

    James Still

A Country Death

She once said that her mother

Had seen far-off light that came

Closer, or she closer to it, until

Her tired heart had started again,

And a year later stopped forever.

And her own eyes now are two

Glints of a strange luminosity

Like foxfire, like the glazed eyes

Of an animal far down the road,

Struck still by approaching light.
