An Open Letter To LaLaa

Aside from several vague criticisms for which you provide no details or examples, you raise the question of why PoetBay hasn't grown.  I have access to no statistics that would prove or disprove your point, though in looking back it does seem that there are fewer members here now than five years ago.

Perhaps there is a kind of "natural selection" at work . . . having posted on several other sites over the years I can say that PoetBay is a unique culture, that without exception people here share their art and appreciation of others' efforts with grace and generosity and often gratitude.  Many of us post far more comments than poems, and that is as it should be and suggests that perhaps PoetBay is more dynamic than you credit it.  If you read a week's postings, poems and comments, you will find that even for a relatively small group there is diversity here.

Last year a poet who shall remain nameless came here from another well-known and culturally opposite site, posted some comments that may even have been well-intentioned but were also arrogant and dismissive . . . he soon disappeared because rather than disparage him we ignored him and he soon disappeared.  What I am suggesting is that the nature of PoetBay's ethos and culture is somewhat self-limiting - not everyone fits in here.  I prefer it that way, and perhaps that makes me elitist though rather I think it is discriminating . . . we choose our friends carefully here and for the most part we all are friends.

You have been a member for three years and have posted no poems or comments, so in a real sense you've passed on the opportunity to help PoetBay grow.  I hope you will decide to join us . . . you will find friends here if you seek them.

I think there has often been a perceived idea that some garner more response but if you look carefully, those who are willing to share and comment more, do encourage reciprocal. I've posted on poetry sites for the last 10 years and have been part of really thriving communities and my conclusions are - if you give more than you expect to receive, you will find these sites wonderfully giving and supportive. For the most part, people are genuine and the small and petty minded don't tend to stay around - they are looking for more vicarious thrills I have found - I like it here, especially now, I feel Poetbay has settled into itself - it is a group, not a clique. Members openly wanting to welcome and share, sadly there is still a behind the scenes murmur and as I have found, it is the ones who never comment, really post and yet begrudge those who get a pleasure from sharing, not just comments but poetry. Only my thoughts and not intended to offend anyone here - I love to see new writers on here and especially when they start to join in - I only want people to enjoy what I have received from sites - also having been a veteran of sites where egos dominate and crush, I think we're doing ok here :-)
