A New Role Model

~

Introducing Joanne

~

Joanne is new to the ward. I like her.

I am not supposed to like or dislike, but I do.

Albert is dear, Debbie is, well, Debbie,

Johnny is an adorable menace, Marlene

Is meek, each is dear in their own way,

There is not one I cannot love for

Who they are. I am not supposed to love,

Not here. Joanne appears to be a street kid,

I haven't heard her diagnosis. I am

Guessing she was unmanageable at home,

Used drugs more than she should, maybe

Ran away one too many times, maybe

She got tired of the abuse and fought back.

She reminds me of me, had my life

Been tougher. I could use a little toughing.

I may learn something from Joanne.

I like this poem. It's simple and matter-of-fact, but its words flow smoothly.

It's getting interesting. It must be hard to work in a hospital and remain detached.

I am enjoying this series and I agree that Joanne has a good chance of getting out--one way or another. Having spent most of my youth in foster homes I tend to identify with Joanne a bit. There was no place that could hold me for very long. The moment I entered a home, my plan to get out would begin. We'll see what she can do. :)
