the girl in a red shirt

i found a poem

about a girl

in a red shirt

she was looking seaward

i wrote the poem

i remember the girl

i remember the red shirt

i loved her

i sent her the poem

were my motives benign

it is good to keep memories alive

some of them

she was my first darling

marketa is not jealous

by nature

but the girl in the red shirt

i need to be careful

~

marketa had a beau

named tadeusz

i don't know the color of his shirt

or if he looked seaward

marketa never speaks of him

but he is there

in her far away gaze

we save some of our love

for the ones

we left behind

love lingers

sometimes it grows

memories gain weight over time

marketa and i are forever

past loves are allowed

they spice the stew

a hint of uncertainty

~

we save some of our love

for the ones

we left behind

The economical language serves this poem well. The emotions are heightened, not reduced, by the graceful simplicity and elegant directness of articulation.

Poems are well able to immortalise before uncertainty taints and diverts our memories.
