The picture on the Mantle

The picture on the Mantle
Shows two closeup face samples
Where smiles and laughs
And a white base ball Cap
Overlooks a Cinci Panorama
With poetic phrased grandeur
Portrayed in glistening empathy

The trip was a goodbye story
A return to a place explored
With childhood joyous memories
Where the blue grass grows
Where the business of horseflesh
Dictates Kentucky economics

A grand old farm house
Repurposed and reused space
Where laughter evoked past tales
Of Vanilla wafers with peanut butter tastes
Tastes new to a smiling elderly face
Horn rimmed eye brows raised
With surprised giggling grace

The land where cattle grazed
Where a tobacco barn stayed
Where a field with no fences was civilized
With school athletic fields applied

All this was respected
All this was expected
With a familiar town hall
Landed with Halloween sprawl
With exposure to fresh eyes

New memories created, secured
Visiting Bourbon distilleries
Glass Chilhuly sculptures
Multi colored reflections choreography
Grain mash pungent odors sustained
Landed wealth on full display

Race horse royalty was visited
A Paris of race horse celebrity
Secretariat legend restated
Beautiful creatures breed to run joyfully
Like their predecessor spirit
Whistling snorts for every stride

This adventure was relaxed
A trek to share a treasured theme
While creating a present past
That overlays, mingles and seemed
To refresh and confirm a cast
Of characters paired anew

Together daily
All night all day
Sleeping nights away
Appeasing ghostly specters
Of shared abuse and trauma

I felt Protected in her smiling eyes
For a time our legacy
Was swept into history
Forever captured by a picture
Sitting on a mantle

How I envy poets who can write a long poem and keep the images and contrasts, etc. up-to-par throughout the work. Reminds me a little of Robinson Jeffer's poems. Enjoyed.

Kee, this poem is so rich- a reflection of both past and present - of memories and peace found. The description of the wonders of Kentucky are beautiful.
Sincerely,
Melinda
