before my time

...learning the ceiling

before floor

—how a day is shaped,

or air keeps its measure,

how the house moved

to a rhythm older

than the streets outside.

Whatever I became

started here,

in a climate set

long before my time.

The earth has rumbled many times and will rumble some more and this poem does evoke visions of an earthquake in my mind. But I can also see it in a metaphorical way... I might see something not there. But the feeling this generates is man vs nature and survival. I have never experienced an actual earthquake but I have a flood. The first opening lines triggered my childhood memories. I was an outdoor playing little kid and when confined to the inside I would easily get bored. Our mom made us take naps. But I would turn my head and look at all the rooms upside down and imagine the ceiling was the floor and the floor was the ceiling. I was just a little kid but it was an amusing view through my eyes.
