savoury feast

savoury feast

( an epulaeryu )

A ladle lifts the broth’s

amber swirl as though some

ancient hearth were waking;

steam rises like heralds

calling us to gather,

to savour this

gold

For those that may not know:

An Epulaeryu is a seven-line poetic form entirely dedicated to food, featuring a strict 33-syllable count distributed in a 7/5/7/5/5/3/1 structure.

ending with an exclamation mark (!)

The form was invented by Joseph S. Spence, Sr. while studying poetry and culture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The name combines the Latin word epulae (meaning feast) with the Asian term ryu (meaning style or form).

Personally, I have never written one and this wonderful poem challenges me to do just that!
