The Sum

A lightning strike recalls the pangs of birth.
I scream because the sum of it shook me,
Took me from womb to life so forcefully.
Nature keeps score: what’s hid it will unearth.

Nature’s a force and its primary mirth:
Reminding us that we’re part of a whole,
That we’re of flesh and bone. Talks of a soul
Is only so we can invent our worth

Which is nothing. From dust we come and go
Right back to dust. The dusk of life’s a tomb,
No matter what the worth assigned to self;

The lightning strike reminds us it is so.
If ever it’s pronged fingers spelt our doom
No house could hide. No gun or knife would help.

An exciting and inventive rhyme scheme there. Dust in the wind, as an old song used to say--I personally try to keep focused on the here and now, though I am a Christian and truly believe that this is not all there is. Tightly composed work and with your usual finesse and expertise.

Yes, nature always wins. But those of us who believe in a soul take comfort in continued existence. Was there really a lightening strike when you were born? That is very portentous. Well written as usual, and rightfully still tinged with anger of the recent event I suspect.

Still reeling from the recent natural calamities, that’s when math-numbers and science hurts, gets so personal.

Wanna know your worth? Sure. Count to 3,000. Why? So you can finally realize that, in the grand total, you counted for nothing.
