reading a dog tag

when I packed up my parent's house
I found a manila envelope
with dog tags

My father's
from military service

mother's and mine

made in 1968

I was 4 months at the time

tanks rolled into Prague

I don't know what they thought

their fears
we were neutral
out of reach

beyond the Iron Curtain

still they still got a dog tag

for their baby

I don't know what to make of this, but I enjoyed it.

There was a lot to be afraid of, no one had a crystal ball, no one knew what might happen. I happened, by chance, to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or the right place at the right time, depends on how you look at it, to watch Tito's tanks roll by for hours. It was enough to make me go looking for dog tags too.
