A Poem Rewritten For My Daughter's Birthday

Not then but now I know you were there,

All the words I have come to for you who

Are the only one to listen and understand;

How we come most often to find grace not

By searching but in being where we are,

Letting it reveal us across a little distance

That opens to take us in, as here the sun

Almost setting beneath the sky, settling into

The sea surge opening darkly, the last light

Flaring and leaning into shadow, lingering

But only if you look up from exactly where

You are and what you see there takes your

Breath and words away - be quiet in a way

Almost no one is anymore and know that

Our prayers are not always what we say

But what is said to us if only we listen:

"Each day I make a moment just for you."
