The allegorical implications to body and soul are rather haunting.
The most unique biological fact about adult luna moths is that they completely lack mouths and digestive systems. They have vestigial mouthparts and do not eat or drink during their adult lives.Instead, they rely entirely on energy stored from their caterpillar stage. Because they have an irreplenishable energy supply, adult luna moths live for only about 7 to 10 days, dedicated solely to mating and laying eggs.
The Luna Moth (Actias luna) is steeped in folklore centered on rebirth, transformation, and spiritual guidance. Named after Luna, the Roman goddess of the moon, its pale green wings, translucent eye spots, and short, week-long adult lifespan lend it an ethereal reputation as a messenger between the human and fairy realms
