SOME BEDSIDE MANNER!

I have been to see the doctor once again.
Just a check-up in reality, but once more
I leave frustrated and clear in my mind
That this man just doesn't like me, or,
Does he not listen to any of his patients?
Sitting back inside my car to await
My anger to dissipate, I watch a couple
Exit from his hallowed doorway, in turmoil
Clearly having quite a vociferous row,
And I can't help wondering if they too
Have just been treated to his strange
Bedside manner - where the computer screen
Is more important than the patient who
Sits facing the right side of his head,
And to whom he just doesn't listen.

It would have been nice had he said,

Looking at my notes, "I'm sorry to see

You've been in hospital once again."

But I conclude such niceties are alien,

Nested, insular, behind his cluttered desk.

Ugh, hard no for me on this clinician. Competence does not preclude the personal gentling civilizing touches to which most of us are accustomed, and which most of us expect. Not mutually exclusive, not a zero-sum game.

It's sad, but, in some fields, the personal characteristics which bring one success don't include those which enable one to do his or her job effectively. Medicine, with its very demanding educational requirements, is one of those fields. Politics, as we've all seen, is another.
