Frankly this was written last night as I was up all night.
I've had insomnia since I was 6yrs and it's a curse. It goes away then always comes back with a vengeance like those zombie movies.

Insomnia

In synaptic bursts of random thoughts
and insights uninvited,
My mind begins to slowly race
Insomnia returns.

Breathing slowly, ever slowly.
trying to compose myself.
Anger courses through the body
that will never sleep.

Eventually the sun comes up,
and stares into my bleary eyes.
Nodding as my lids grow heavy,
My head fall to my chest.
Insomnia returns.

As a lifelong insomniac, I can relate to this. Apparently even when I was a baby, I would be found in the cot, wide awake, not always crying - These days I try to convince myself I just don't need much sleep, but the truth is, eventually I have to crash, and then do I crash, only to have the beast return

"To sleep, perchance to dream" . . . to do neither would be (must be) hell.

Very nice, Hans, well described and well written. You should be pleased. Now, get some sleep.

I read somewhere that the way to fall asleep is to try not to fall asleep. What usually works for me is to flick on a light and read somethng for awhile.

Enjoyable poem that expresses perfectly the discomfort of not being able to sleep.

Insomnia inspired poetry may be good, but it is not worth it. I'd a hundred times rather sleep the night through than write. I sympathize, Hans. Been there, done it. Doing it. Sometimes. Every sentence rings true.

Bless you, Mr Bump.
The peace dove has known insomnia due to certain medical afflictions, but all is well now.
I wonder, perhaps you may be a member of the sleep elite?
